Hyundai has announced it will move production of the i20 hatchback from the current location in India to Turkey. Starting in May next year, 80.000 units of Hyundai i20 will be built at Hyundai Turkey plant in the city called Izmit and will be exported to European countries.
Hyundai plans to invest about $75 million additionally to rebuild the plant, which currently produces four door Hyundai Accent and B-segment Matrix MPV. Large scale Hyundai investment does not only mean more Hyundai cars but also new jobs in Turkey as Hyundai will have to hire additional 500 workers to produce the i20 hatch. According to Hyundai, current plant's capacity will be raised to 100.000 vehicles per year, with 80.000 units devoted to Hyundai i20.
Hyundai sells i20 and Getz hatch in Turkey where it has the leading market share among B-segment cars. In the first eight months, Hyundai sold 7.000 units of Getz, which makes it the number one selling car in the country. Hyundai i20 has only been on sale since May, and in the meantime the company already sold more than 1.500 units.
