The low cost car market is soon going to see a new entrant Hyndai Eon. Priced at Rs.2.5 lakh this budget car is certainly going to attract more people to the entry level car segment. The company has timed Eon's launch to coincide with the pre-Diwali shopping rush. That is the time when most car companies and showrooms offer attractive discounts, low interest rate on car loans, low insurance costs and freebies.
With an attractive price tag like that Hyundai’s low-end car is expected to upstage Alto with comparable fuel efficiency, performance, looks and space. It will also give some competition to Tata Nano and Suzuki Alto.
Designed as a hatchback, it has some design elements that remind one of Hyundai Santro. It is a small car but appears rather tall suggesting more headroom. Its interior detailing is similar to that of Hyundai i10, including features like tilt steering and remote central locking besides accessories like the CD player. The only compromise, if it can be called that, is less leg room for rear seat occupants on account of the 215L boot space. But that doesn’t mean back seat occupants will feel cramped. The legroom is negligibly less than standard.
On the outside too, the model reminds one of the other cars from the Hyundai stable headlights with chrome lining, hexagonal grille, etc. The classy and fluidic lines, clearly in contrast to its small price, would appeal to those expecting elegant form in their vehicle.
Powered by a Santro IRDE 814 cc engine with 56 Bhp peak output, the Eon will be no less than any other Hyundai beauty offering fuel efficiency of 21.1kmpl. Car experts believe the higher ground clearance and small size of this vehicle will ensure easier rides on Indian roads, and better control on curvy roads.
Hyundai Eon's price and features, collectively suggest that it may well prove to be another phenomenon like the Maruti 800. So until Diwali, let’s wait and watch for the Eon to hit Indian roads.
